MATRIX-project Symfonieorkest d'Academie Sint-Niklaas
MATRIX-project
For Ropes, Shalan Alhamwy found inspiration in Brugsepoort, a neighbourhood in Ghent with a mix of nationalities and cultures and a lively atmosphere, but also poverty. Alhamwy’s creation reflects its daily life, embracing a huge range of musical traditions, from Gnawa (a traditional Moroccan music style characterised by African rhythms) to Western romantic. The baglama, oud and Middle Eastern percussion (bendir) add some unusual timbres to the 80-strong symphony orchestra of the Academie Podium Sint-Niklaas.

The symphony orchestra of d'Academie Podium Sint-Niklaas consists of around 80 students, former students and outside enthusiasts with a passion for classical music. They are always looking for adventurous programmes. For instance, pushing cars on stage, DJs taking place behind the turntables or working with ad hoc instruments such as balloons or matchboxes.
Pieter Matthynssens
Pieter Matthynssens is a cellist and art scientist. Together with composer Stefan Prins, he is artistic director of the Nadar Ensemble, which focuses on works by the youngest generation of national and international composers.
