Collegium Vocale Gent
Singing to the light
Sacred music always creates connection, whether it’s from the Catholic, Jewish, Russian Orthodox, or any other faith. It gives us occasions for contemplation, and a sense of tranquillity that is otherwise sometimes difficult to find.
Rachmaninoff’s All-night Vigil – better known simply as his 'Vespers' – is one of the 20th century’s most beloved choral works. From the first note to the last it makes body and soul feel radiant. Serene and sonorous, with the basses descending to the lowest registers of the human voice, the cycle passes through the prayers of the night from dusk to dawn, an exercise in rebirth.
