Alban Berg Ensemble Wien
Waltzes and madness
Early-20th-century Vienna was a real musical melting pot. For some it was the epicentre of musical audacity, and for others the eternal abode of the traditional, carefree waltz. This concert presents a cross-section of the Viennese music scene in around 1910.
Gustav Mahler teeters at the edge of the Romantic in his unfinished Symphony no. 10.
Schoenberg tries to completely reinvent that venerable genre by making everything shorter, bolder and even more outrageous, which some felt was a step off that edge into madness.
Richard Strauss is waltzing away again, catchy and frivolous, with such a flair and a sweetness that you’d believe he was Viennese himself.
