On traces of connection
Benjamin Britten is one of the very few 20th-century composers who managed to develop an authentic style of his own which is both innovative and accessible.
In the 1960s and 70s, he wrote three cello suites in honour of his friendship with the world-famous cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, following the tradition of the beloved cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. Like Bach, Britten succeeds in writing refined music with a n enormous emotional impact within this rarefied genre.
Lovers of the Bach suites will doubtless be moved and transported by their counterparts by Benjamin Britten. You’ll hear the first and third suites, with Britten’s stunning sonata for cello in between them. This powerful work is striking for its outspoken resemblance to a dialogue, providing such a wonderful contrast to the ‘solitary’ solo suites.
